Historical Background
The present temple structure was built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. Over time, it became a major center of Vaishnav tradition and played a key role in shaping the religious culture of Odisha. Many rulers contributed to its maintenance and rituals through the centuries.
Architectural Style
The temple is a masterpiece of traditional Kalinga architecture. The complex consists of four main structures placed in a straight line: the Vimana (sanctum tower), the Jagamohana (assembly hall), the Nata Mandira (dance hall), and the Bhoga Mandapa (offering hall). The towering spire, detailed carvings, and massive stone walls reflect the high level of craftsmanship of ancient Odisha.
Temple Flag and Neelachakra
At the top of the temple stands the Neelachakra, a powerful symbol made of metal. Above it, a flag is changed every day by temple servitors. Devotees believe the flag carries divine protection and blessings
