WHY IS PURI DHAM FAMOUS ?

Puri Dham is globally famous as one of the four holiest Char Dham Hindu pilgrimage sites, home to the 12th-century Jagannath Temple, and renowned for the annual Ratha Yatra (Chariot Festival). It attracts millions for its unique wooden deities (Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra), the massive Mahaprasad kitchen, and mysterious, unexplained phenomena.

Key Reasons for Fame:

  • Char Dham Pilgrimage: It is one of the four sacred sites (with Badrinath, Dwarka, and Rameswaram) believed to grant moksha (salvation) to Hindus.
  • Ratha Yatra (Car Festival): The world-famous, annual Chariot Festival involves millions of devotees pulling massive, decorated chariots, which inspired the English word “juggernaut”.
  • Unique Deities and Rituals: Unlike most temples using stone or metal, the idols in the Jagannath Temple are made of sacred wood (Neem) and are replaced every 12-19 years in a ritual called Nabakalebara.
  • Unexplained Mysteries: The temple is famous for several phenomena: the main dome casts no shadow, no birds fly over the temple, the flag always flies against the wind, and the sound of the ocean disappears inside the entrance.
  • Mahaprasad: The temple boasts one of the largest kitchens in the world, serving thousands daily, where food is cooked in earthen pots stacked over fire, yet the top pot cooks first.
  • Coastal Location: Beyond spirituality, Puri is famous for its long golden beaches along the Bay of Bengal.

Puri is also a major center for Gaudiya Vaishnavism, closely associated with saints like Chaitanya Mahaprabh
